The Cross Gives Us New Life

Jesus died and suffered on a Roman cross almost 2,000 years ago so that through the shedding of His blood He could make a full atonement for all human sin. This atonement is the only grounds for salvation from anyone’s sins and it is sufficient even today for every individual of Adam’s race that will accept what Jesus did for them. Acts 4:12 says, “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” The names of Allah, Shiva, Baal, Krishna, or any other false god will not atone for your sins. Only the name of Jesus can do that! II Corinthians 5:17 says, “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are become new.” Various scriptures, as well as our own experience, tell us our old life of sin was ugly, sin controlled us, it separated us from God, it brought us under the sentence of death, it caused us to walk according to the god of this world, the devil, it was lived in the lusts of the flesh, and it made us deserving of God’s wrath. But if we accepted what Christ did for us on the cross, Christ made us into a “new creature”. If we truly got saved, the ugly things from our old life of sin “passed away…all things…became new”, as Jesus changed us into something better than we were. In light of that I shouldn’t have to make this statement, but today I do: new life in Christ should look different than the old life of sin. There was a day when most of the church in America believed that, but unfortunately that isn’t the case today, even in the church. Many people today claim to have experienced new life in Christ, but their lives bear very little resemblance to what they could or should look like. Many professing Christians today seem to have crossed II Corinthians 6:17 out of their Bibles: “Come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.” The obvious implication is that if you won’t come out from the world and start living a holy, separated life from the unclean stuff, then the Lord won’t receive you, no matter how hard you try to convince yourself that He has! And how can you think that this “new creature” business has happened to you, and that “old things are passed away” and that “all things have become new”, if you’ve not come out from the world and began to separate yourself from its sin? Something is wrong with you and your testimony of being a “new creature” in Christ if you’re still touching the unclean stuff. If we think we can be a Christian and still dress like the world, talk like them, act like them, laugh at the same dirty stuff they laugh at, go to all the same places they go, and do the same sinful things they do, we’ve got it all wrong. And why would your pagan neighbor, who has no time for Christ and Christianity, think he needs Christ and that he needs to change if you and he are still much alike? The world is looking for something better than what they have, but they won’t find it in Christ if they don’t first see something better in you. Now, I don’t think we need to be as drastic as say, the Amish, but if we claim that the blood that was shed on the cross has changed us, but we still frequent the bar rooms, we still use foul language, we still see nothing wrong with cheating or lying, we’re still living together instead of getting married, and on and on it goes that we haven’t yet given up our evil ways, then something is drastically wrong! Understand this: new life in Christ has to look different than the old life or sin. If it doesn’t, then you can’t possibly be “in Christ”, even if you think you are! In a few days the whole world will think of Jesus’ death on the cross and celebrate His resurrection from the dead on Easter Sunday. He shed His blood on that cross to set you free from the bondage that sin has you in and to change your life for the better. The cross, the shedding of Jesus’ blood, the resurrection; all give us the necessary power for our life to change for the better. The blood of Jesus can set the drunk, the drug addict, and those that are addicted to pornography, free! It can set you free from any and every other sin you want to put in there! Has this life changing power been applied to your sins and life yet? What better time to think about it than Easter! If you’re longing for new life in Christ, get on your knees, confess your sins to Jesus and ask Him to be your Savior from those sins and to change your life. He will! As a matter of fact, He’s anxious to do it! He died on the cross for you for that very reason. The cross gives us new life. Have you experienced it yet? If you haven’t, Easter will mean nothing more than chocolate rabbits and maybe some new clothes to you. How very sad!!!
