And You Wonder Why They Laugh At Us

As I read the Gospel accounts of how Jesus was treated before His crucifixion, the one word missing is the word “laughed”. “Mocked” is often used, like in Mark 15:20 where it says, “And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe from him.” I’m sure though they laughed also when they put the purple robe on Him. I’m sure they laughed when they placed the crown of thorns on His head. I’m sure they laughed when they saluted Him saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” It seems that laughter is always present when mocking takes place. Being mocked, laughed at, and persecuted are all things Jesus said we too could expect since they did it to Him. In John 15:21 He said, “But all these things will they do unto you for my names sake.” So, don’t be surprised if and when they laugh at or mock or persecute you for being a Christian! I doubt that you’ve been much of a Christian if somewhere someone hasn’t laughed at you for being a follower of Jesus, and called you a “holy Joe”, or said or did something worse than that to you. Thank God it’s mostly laughing or mocking they do here as of yet! In Muslim countries they may laugh as they cut your head off! I think worse things are coming our way here, the way our country is going. The world finds many of the stories we hold dear about Jesus, amusing. They may say to you, surely you don’t believe Jesus really walked on water or that He calmed storms, do you? Surely you don’t take the things you read in that Bible literally? If you tell them you do, chances are it will draw a snicker or two from some, even if it’s not done out loud. Who in our educated society would believe such fairy tales as these, they will say. Some who even call themselves Christian preachers may do that. So, they laugh. But we who know Jesus and have experienced what He can do, we know they’re the foolish ones for laughing, and not us for believing. Their day will come when they will wish they had believed instead of laughed, as well! But sometimes who can blame them for laughing, when you think of some of the nonsense they see done in the name of Jesus? Think of the recent indictment that was brought against the Altoona-Johnstown Catholic Diocese. Everyone who knows anything about Christians of any kind knows that Christians are supposed to stay pure sexually. In that one Catholic Diocese alone, 50 priests, bishops, etc. have been named as child molesters! Think of that! Literally 100’s of victims have been named! Some have said to me recently, who in their right mind would trust the Catholic Church in our area with their children? What’s sad and unfair is that the world lumps us all together, and they think if Catholics do that, so do the Nazarenes and the Pentecostals and the Baptists. And then you wonder why they laugh at us? But we Protestants have had our share of Jim Bakker’s and Jimmy Swaggart’s though, too! Or think of this— if it wasn’t so pathetic it would be laughable. Have you ever watched so-called faith healer Peter Popoff on TV, or seen some of Benny Hinn’s antics, or seen clips of the so-called “laughing revival”, where people rolled in the aisles laughing uncontrollable while the preacher preached, or barked like dogs? Some of the nonsense you might see on Christian TV, especially coming from the so-called “prosperity preachers” , if it wasn’t so pathetic would be downright laughable! It’s no wonder some laugh when you see some of the things that go on in the name of the Lord! But God gets blamed for a lot of things that He has nothing to do with! Sometimes the church looks more like a circus than a church, especially when we get to fighting over some of the ridiculous things churches have fought over! Oh I know, some are going to laugh and mock no matter what we do, even when we live right, but may God help us in the church to live our lives so we don’t give unbelievers good reason to laugh! They laughed at Jesus for no good reason. If they laugh at us, may it not be because we’re doing something ridiculous, but may it be for the same reasons they laughed at Jesus! If we live right but they still laugh, I Corinthians 1:18 may help us to understand why they do it: “For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.” If someone laughs at you for being a Christian, live your life in an upright manner so that they have nothing to laugh about, and pray for them. And take comfort in Jesus’ words in Matthew 5:11-12: “Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you.”
