In John 14:6, Jesus told Thomas, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” The simple notion that Jesus Christ is the only way to God and to heaven may well be the most challenged belief that we Christians hold. And yet it is not just people outside the church who oppose what Jesus said here. Many who call themselves Christians firmly disagree with Jesus’ statement here, believing instead that many roads or many religions will lead you to the same heaven we’re planning on going to. Yes, surveys of Christians, as well as Christian ministers, tell the sad truth that many professing Christians in America today don’t believe you have to be a Christian to know God. Yet, if what Jesus said that He is “the way, the truth, and the life” and that “no man can come to the Father” except by way of Him, if that is not the absolute truth, then why would I want to hold Jesus up as someone anymore special than some other god? I became a Christian in March of 1971. At that time many hippies were getting saved. They called themselves Jesus People, or some called them, Jesus Freaks. Some of them were definitely a little freaky, but some of them were the real deal. Some of them held to the truth of the Bible closer than many Nazarenes, Baptists, and Pentecostals are doing today, while some of them had some pretty far out ideas. But one thing they had in common was the fact that most of them believed there was only “One Way”, and that Jesus was that “Way”. I was most of them believed there was only “One Way”, and that Jesus was that “Way”. I was not a Jesus Freak, but I put a little sticker in my Bible then that was kind of a symbol of the Jesus People at that time. It was a cross with a hand holding up one finger in front of the cross and below it were the words, “One Way”. There was only one way then, and there is still only one way today! If one holds to that position today, as I do, that there is only one way and that all roads don’t lead to heaven, you may be called names like arrogant, narrow minded, old fashioned, exclusive, holier than thou, be accused of being against unity, or even worse. I know because I’ve been called all of the above. I hold that position and I don’t think I’m any of that—I just believe what Jesus said! You can try to say something different if you want, but Jesus declared He was the only way, the only truth, and the only one that could give life. The fact that Jesus said He was the only way to heaven is the solid rock upon which Christianity is based! If I were to deny that I would deny what Jesus claimed to be. I could not in good conscience sit under the ministry of any preacher that did not believe Jesus’ way is the only way. Can you? Better yet, do you? If Jesus is God then He is the only way because He is the destination. Let me explain what I mean by that by thinking about it in this manner. You can get to Baltimore from where I live by plane, train, helicopter, Interstate highway, various secondary or back roads, trails, even rivers, but you can only get to Baltimore by going to Baltimore. So, if Jesus is God then can only get to Baltimore by going to Baltimore. So, if Jesus is God then He is the goal of the journey and the way we must go to get there, and when we find Him we have found the true God! Johnny Lee sang a country song a number of years back entitled, “Looking For Love In All The Wrong Places”. That’s something incidentally a lot of people are doing with the wrong people, as well. But many are doing the same with God—they’re looking for God in all the wrong places, as well. And on top of it, what’s even worse is that they’re unaware that He is actually looking for them! You can look for God in the name of Allah, Shiva, Buddha, Kali, or even in the name of your own made up god, but you aren’t going to find Him until you start calling upon the name of Jesus the Nazarene, the sinless, virgin born, Son of God. I don’t mean the Mormon Jesus. He’s supposedly the brother of Lucifer—a totally different Jesus from the one I’m talking about. My Jesus is different from the Jesus of Islam, who supposedly has converted to Islam since He left, and will kill all Christians and Jews who won’t convert to Islam when He returns. My Jesus is different from the many Jesus’ of the New Age Movement, who are just another in a long line of ascended masters, or avatars. The Jesus I’m talking about can set you free from sin’s grip on your life. He can turn you into a brand new creature and fill you with His Holy Spirit so that you can live a holy life. The best is left for the last—my Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life, and if you accept Him as you Savior from sin, submit to Him, and live accept Him as your Savior from sin, submit to Him, and live for Him, He will see to it that you go to the heaven He has prepared for those who love Him!
