Still The Apple Of His Eye

Zechariah 2:8 tells us just how precious the Jewish people are to the Lord, even today. It says, “For thus saith the Lord…He that toucheth you (meaning Israel) toucheth the apple of his eye.” This is not the only time this term, “apple of his eye” is used in scripture. In Psalm 17:8 David prays that God would, “Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings.” In Deuteronomy 31:10 Moses says in his song, “He kept him as the apple of his eye”. And in Proverbs 7:2 Solomon says, “Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye”. What is meant by the term, “the apple of his eye”? The word rendered “apple” is usually considered to mean the pupil of the eye, which is the entrance to this organ. One writer in referring to the eye says this, “There is nothing, as we know, more delicate, or more tender, than this in the body of man.” You can bite me, cut me, or severely wound me on various parts of my body and I won’t feel as much pain as if you mess with my eyes. Just a tiny speck of dirt or even a gnat in the eye can cause me a lot of distress. So, God was saying there that Israel was this precious to Him, He loves them so much that they are like the apple of His eye, so that He cannot bear to see them hurt or touched. When you try to hurt them, God burns with so much displeasure toward you, it’s as though you were trying to pierce His own eyes. When you hurt them, God feels their pain. I am well aware of the fact that many in the modern day nation of Israel are even atheists, but that does not change the way God looks at them. He still looks at Israel as “the apple of His eye”. The Christian church is precious to the Lord, also, but the church has not replaced Israel as some teach. What many don’t realize is that God’s promise to Abraham in Genesis 12:3 still holds true and is still in effect. God said there, “And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee, and in thee shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.” In light of those words, God will either “bless” or “curse” America based on the way we treat Israel. I know God blessed us in America because of the Christian influence in our nation. Perhaps no nation in history has done more to spread the Gospel to the world than the United States. But these days we need other countries to sent Christian missionaries to us! But He also blessed America because of the way we have helped the Jews, as well. For years we have been Israel’s best friend in the world, and they have been our best ally, and God has blessed us on account of that one fact. The way that the Jews have returned to their land in Israel as a fulfillment of prophecy ought to make believers in the Bible out of even the worst of scoffers! Israel is still calling for Jews around the world to return to their Promised Land. Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, just issued a call for French Jews to come home in light of the recent Muslim terrorist attack that killed seventeen people in France, including five Jews. He said, “To the Jews of France, all the Jews of Europe, I would like to say that Israel is not just the place in whose direction you pray, the state of Israel is your home…All Jews who want to immigrate to Israel will be welcomed here warmly and with open arms.” Dr. Bob Glaze, writing in the Feb. 2015 edition of the Prophetic Observer said this, “This could very well be the final stage of the second ‘Aliyah’ mentioned in Isaiah 11:11. There it says, “And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord will set his hand again the second time to recover the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria…and from the islands of the sea.” If you wonder what a Jew means when they use that Hebrew phrase, “making Aliyah”, it simply means that they are moving back to their God promised homeland of Israel. Many things about our present administration trouble me greatly, but none bothers me any more than the way we are now treating Israel. As I write this our Congress is awaiting the day when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will address a joint session of Congress. I hope it will change by the time it happens and you read this, but some members of Congress, as well as our president and vice-president are planning to boycott his speech. With Obama as our president, the only thing that might keep God from passing His judgment upon us as a nation would be our positive treatment of Israel. And now we are turning our backs on not only our best ally in the world, but on “The apple of God’s eye”. May God help us and have mercy on our nation! Rev.
